Tips to Keep Your Garbage Can from Smelling
Garbage can be a smelly business that no one likes to deal with. Whether it’s your home garbage can or your outdoor bin it can be an issue. Luckily we have a lot of experience with garbage, smelly or otherwise. We’ve put together some tips to keep your garbage can from smelling.
1. Don’t Throw Away Loose Items.
It can be easy and convenient to simply throw loose garbage away in your outdoor containers. They are being dumped directly in the garbage truck, so it shouldn’t be a problem right? Unfortunately, loose trash can create a smell. While garbage bags can help contain smell and bacteria, loose trash can spread both. Next time you want to clean out your car or toss something quickly into the can, put it in a trash bag.
2. Use Scented Bags.
We know scented bags may seem a little extra for a lot of people, but they really can help. Trash bags with built-in scents or odor blockers can make a world of difference. They can keep smells from escaping the bag and filling your home. Imagine smelling a fresh scent when opening the lid instead of a foul odor. Next time you’re in the market for trash bags consider a scented option.
3. Use Odor Aids.
There are plenty of home options that can help kill odor causing bacteria or help keep your can smelling good. Baking soda is a great option not just for cleaning your garbage can but for keeping it smelling fresh. Combined with a bit of water and scrubbing it can be used to clean and rid odor from your can. Sprinkling it on the bottom of your can will help absorb moisture and keep odors at bay. Dryer sheets placed on the bottom of the can also absorb some moisture and help keep bad odors away. You can even use used dryer sheets to give them a second life. Other items like essential oils can help mask and eliminate smells as well.
